Tehran: Iranian officials formed a special team to plan the delayed state funeral for former slain leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, state media reported Friday.
Mohsen Mahmoudi announced the new planning phase on state television. Mahmoudi serves as the head of the Tehran Coordination Council for Islamic Propaganda.
He noted that multiple government bodies will coordinate the logistics. Consequently, officials expect a massive public turnout in the capital city.
U.S. and Israeli airstrikes killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Feb. 28, 2026. He led the Islamic Republic for over three decades.
The war with America and Israel forced officials to postpone the burial event. Specifically, heavy missile exchanges throughout March and April blocked initial public ceremonies.
His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, took office as the new supreme leader. However, he has not appeared in public since taking power. A bomb blast wounded him during the initial February attacks.

A fragile ceasefire has stopped active bombing since April. Therefore, the planning team can now safely map out the security zones.
Officials have not set the final event dates yet. Ultimately, state media will publish the full multi-day timeline once the local councils approve the plans.
