HAWAII, United States: Hurricane Lala Hawaii flooding killed one person and swept away homes on the Big Island after the storm passed south of the state.
Governor Josh Green said the storm uprooted more than 100 properties from their foundations. Flash floods and mudslides also hit several areas.
Some locations received up to 32 inches of rain, according to the supplied reports. Lala’s eyewall passed about 30 miles from the Big Island’s South Point.
The storm also knocked out electricity for more than 200,000 customers at one stage. Three hospitals lost grid power but continued operating on backup generators.
Authorities deployed about 180 Hawaii National Guard personnel for emergency operations. Hilo International Airport and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport were temporarily closed before reopening.
