LAHORE, Punjab: The Punjab E-Bike Scheme will provide more than 125,000 electric bikes to eligible students with zero down payment and a planned monthly instalment of about Rs3,000.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif approved key elements of the programme at a special review meeting and rejected proposals for any upfront payment or charges beyond the monthly instalment.
The Punjab government will bear the interest and insurance costs, while helmets and safety rods will be provided without charge, according to the Chief Minister’s Office.
The scheme will be open to students enrolled in both government and private-sector educational institutions across Punjab.
Maryam Nawaz directed officials to open the e-bike portal this week and arrange delivery to eligible students within six weeks. In a statement on X, she said applications would open Friday.
The bikes will use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. Applicants will also receive two days of free e-bike training under the programme.

The chief minister separately gave in-principle approval to gradually extend the scheme to government employees, public departments and delivery riders.
The Rs 3,000 monthly payment is still described in the meeting account as an in-principle instalment amount.
