Ismail Haniyeh, a senior leader of the Palestinian political organization Hamas, has reached out to Pakistan, seeking its intervention to stop the ongoing conflict with Israel. His request came during a crucial dialogue held in Islamabad about the sacred Al-Aqsa Mosque and the responsibilities of the Muslim community worldwide.

During the event organized by Majlis Ittehad-e-Ummah Pakistan, Haniyeh highlighted the significance of Pakistan’s role in the international arena. He referred to the nation as “brave” and lauded its history of jihad, implying that Pakistan’s involvement could potentially alter the course of the ongoing conflict with Israel. Haniyeh’s appeal for Pakistan’s support stems from his belief in the country’s ability to take a firm stand for Muslim causes globally.

Haniyeh also drew attention to the recent escalation in violence between Israel and Hamas. The conflict, which intensified in early October, saw Hamas launch an all-out attack on Israel, leading to a severe response from the Israeli side. The result has been a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with over 16,200 casualties, predominantly women and children, due to Israel’s ground and air assaults. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern about the deteriorating conditions in Gaza and warned of a complete breakdown of public order.

Haniyeh’s Criticism of International Relations and Appeals

In his speech, Haniyeh criticized the diplomatic relations established between Islamic countries and Israel, viewing them as detrimental to the Palestinian cause. He also expressed disappointment over the failure to implement the Oslo Accords and the continued occupation of Palestinian territories. Haniyeh accused the United States and other nations of backing Israel and hoped for Israel’s retreat in the face of truth and justice. He described the Gaza attack by Israel as intended for “permanent destruction” and defended Hamas’ actions as necessary self-defence.

Concluding his address, Haniyeh characterized the Jewish community as the foremost enemy of Muslims globally and underscored the sacrifices made by Palestinians in the conflict. He maintained high expectations from Pakistan, believing in its capacity to influence Israel to retreat. Haniyeh’s speech reflected a combination of desperation, hope, and a call for solidarity among the Muslim nations, with Pakistan being a central figure in his appeal for support.
