Meta’s cloud API malfunction was identified as the culprit behind a global WhatsApp outage, which left countless users demanding explanations and impacted communication for millions across the globe.
Meta confirmed the outage on its service status page shortly after reports emerged around 2 pm ET, highlighting the inability to send or receive messages as a considerable disruption, the first of its scale since October 2022, directly linked to issues within the Cloud API.
Meta’s engineering team immediately embarked on resolving the problem, promising updates within a four-hour window. The outage’s breadth was evident, with Downdetector.com recording tens of thousands of reports.
At the outage’s peak, the United States saw over 24,000 reports, with substantial disruptions in India, the United Kingdom, and Brazil. After over three hours, service was restored, as WhatsApp announced, ending the widespread inconvenience.
This incident exposed the fragility of Meta’s platforms, occurring shortly after outages impacted Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. The simultaneous Instagram issues during the WhatsApp downtime, noted by Downdetector with over 5,000 reports, compounded user frustrations.
Meta’s update indicated ongoing “major disruptions” across some business and messaging platforms despite resolving primary issues. This incident underscored WhatsApp’s crucial role in global communications.
With a vast user base reliant on WhatsApp and other Meta products, the platform’s significance is undeniable. WhatsApp was celebrated for its encryption and calling features, and it became a key player in Meta’s portfolio following its $19.3 billion acquisition in 2014.
Meta has not officially addressed the outage’s specifics, leaving the community awaiting further details.
