Glenn Phillips led New Zealand to a 78-run victory over Pakistan with an unbeaten century in the tri-nation series opener at Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday. Supported by half-centuries from Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell, New Zealand set a formidable target of 331 runs.
Despite a robust start by opener Fakhar Zaman, who scored 84 runs from 69 balls, Pakistan’s batting lineup crumbled, ending their innings at 252 in 47.5 overs. Star players Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan were disappointed, scoring only 10 and 3 runs, respectively. Vice-captain Salman Ali Agha added a 51-ball 40, but Michael Bracewell’s bowling cut his effort short. Abrar Ahmed added late resistance with an unbeaten 25 off 15 balls, but it was not enough to turn the tide.
New Zealand’s bowlers were in fine form, with Mitchell Santner and Matt Henry taking three wickets and Bracewell adding two. Their efforts ensured a comfortable win for the visiting team.
New Zealand, winning the toss and opting to bat, initially struggled at 39 for two. However, a crucial 95-run partnership between Williamson and Mitchell set the stage for Phillips’ explosive innings. Phillips smashed 106 not out off 74 deliveries, propelling New Zealand to a challenging total of 330 for six.
Shaheen Afridi was a notable performer for Pakistan, claiming three wickets, including the crucial ones of Williamson and the dangerous Michael Bracewell. Despite these efforts, Pakistan’s bowling unit struggled to contain New Zealand’s hitters in the critical stages of the game.
This match sets a high bar for the upcoming fixtures in the series and builds anticipation for the Champions Trophy 2025. Both teams showcased their strengths and areas for improvement as they prepare for more intense competition in the games to come.
