Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Election Commissioner Raja Shahbaz Khan said on Wednesday that GB local government elections would be held on August 2, 2026.
Speaking at a press conference, Khan said the GB Election Commission had issued the election schedule. He added that returning officers, district returning officers and assistant returning officers had been appointed.
According to the schedule, returning officers will issue public notices on June 6. Candidates can submit nomination papers from June 9 to June 15.
The polls will cover union councils, district councils, town committees, municipal committees and municipal corporations across Gilgit-Baltistan.
Khan said the last local body elections in the region took place in 2004. The new vote will therefore take place after a 22-year gap. He said delimitation and demarcation had been completed under the Local Government Act 2014.
Previously, Gilgit-Baltistan had district councils, union councils and municipal committees in urban areas.

However, Khan said the new system would include town committees, municipal committees and municipal corporations in urban centres.
The local government polls had earlier been scheduled for February 14, 2026. However, authorities postponed them indefinitely due to harsh weather conditions.
Political parties had also raised concerns about holding elections around Muharram and other religious occasions.
The parties feared that any delay beyond June could push the polls to September or October.
