SHEIKHUPURA, Punjab: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif digitally inaugurated the USD4.5 million Nestlé biomass plant in Sheikhupura on August 2, officials said.

The facility can generate 30 tonnes of steam per hour. It will use about 72,000 tons of agricultural residue as fuel each year.

Officials expect the project to reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 24,345 tons. They also projected yearly fuel-cost savings of about USD2.15 million.

The plant will use crop residue that farmers can otherwise burn in open fields. Therefore, the Punjab government said the project could support efforts to reduce air pollution and smog.

During the inauguration, officials briefed Maryam Nawaz on Nestlé Pakistan’s operations and environmental initiatives. The chief minister described the facility as an example of renewable energy and the circular economy.

She said it supported the Punjab government’s priorities of cleaner air, environmental protection and sustainable industrial development.

Maryam Nawaz also pledged continued provincial support for organisations investing in green technology and climate-friendly industrial projects.

The facility expands Nestlé Pakistan’s renewable-energy program. The company’s 2026 corporate briefing said it aimed to halve greenhouse-gas emissions by 2030 from its 2018 baseline and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
