France: French President Emmanuel Macron revealed on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, that France intends to recognize a Palestinian state within months, potentially at a UN conference in New York this June.
Speaking to France 5 after visiting Egypt, Macron said, “We must move towards recognition, and we will do so in the coming months.” He will co-chair the event with Saudi Arabia to finalize mutual recognition among multiple parties.

Macron stressed the dual goal: “I want those who defend Palestine to recognize Israel in turn, which many don’t.” He sees this as key to countering Iran’s denial of Israel’s existence and fostering regional security. France has long backed a two-state solution, especially since Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, but formal recognition would shift policy and could strain ties with Israel, which calls such moves premature.

Palestinian official Varsen Aghabekian Shahin praised the plan as a “step in the right direction” for a two-state future. Nearly 150 countries already recognize Palestine, with Ireland, Norway, Spain, and Slovenia acting in 2024 amid outrage over Israel’s Gaza strikes.

Unlike the hesitant US, France would be the biggest European power to join them. Macron opposed the Gaza annexation ideas in Egypt, as in Trump’s “Riviera” vision, saying, “It’s not a real estate project. No one will invest a cent without peace.”
