FIFA has agreed with the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) to televise the 2023 Women’s World Cup, thus averting a potential blackout in Europe’s ‘Big Five’ nations. The agreement follows disputes between FIFA and broadcasters from France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK.
While financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, the decision ensures maximum exposure for the tournament. The announcement expands on a deal struck last October that included 28 countries and now encompasses 34 nations. Participating teams will see a significant increase in prize money, from $50 million in 2019 to $150 million in 2023, although this is still far less than the $440 million at the 2022 men’s World Cup.
