A person posing as a CrowdStrike employee claimed responsibility for disrupting France’s high-speed rail network, significantly affecting travel as Paris hosted the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics.
The claim follows a similar stunt where the same individual took credit for a global Microsoft outage, which became a viral meme on X. The initial disruption was linked to a faulty update in CrowdStrike’s ‘Falcon Sensor’ antivirus program, which had previously caused a widespread shutdown of Windows computers on July 19.
Vincent Flibustier, the user behind these claims, gained internet fame with an AI-generated photo of himself at CrowdStrike’s office, joking about his disruptive ‘first day.’ Recently, he mirrored this act with another AI-generated image, this time placing himself in front of Societe Nationale Des Chemins De Fer Francais, France’s national railway company, which quickly went viral.
Impact on France’s Rail Network
The weekend’s arson attacks on the French rail system are expected to impact approximately 800,000 passengers, with 250,000 experiencing disruptions as early as Friday, as reported by SNCF. These incidents have paralyzed train services nationwide, complicating travel plans during a busy period for both the Olympics and summer vacations.
Delays ranging from 90 minutes to two hours have affected routes between Paris and regions in the north and east of France. Although the southeastern line remained operational due to rail workers deterring unauthorized access, the damage to other lines has been considerable.
Eurostar, the high-speed rail service connecting France with the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany, announced that it would cancel about 25% of its services. The remaining trains are expected to run on slower tracks and are not typically used for high-speed travel, further delaying the transportation schedule.
