The EU, amid its ongoing probe into X under the Digital Services Act, cautions Musk before Trump interview: ‘With great audience comes…’
Before interviewing Donald Trump, Elon Musk received a warning from the EU regarding his legal obligations under the Digital Services Act to curb harmful content on X. This reminder was part of an ongoing investigation into X, previously known as Twitter, which mandates digital firms to monitor online content to protect users actively.
Thierry Breton, the EU’s internal market commissioner, emphasized the responsibility that comes with large audiences. He tweeted, “With great audience comes greater responsibility,” attaching a letter that outlines Musk’s duties to combat illegal content and disinformation.
Breton highlighted the consistent application of DSA obligations, stressing they apply to all user interactions on X, including Musk’s own, given his significant following. The warning was prompted by the potential risks of amplifying harmful content through Musk’s platforms, particularly referencing his scheduled interview with Trump and recent contentious remarks about disturbances in the UK.
Further, Breton noted ongoing vigilance over content that could incite violence, hate, or racism, particularly about significant global political or social events. He affirmed his commitment to aggressively use EU regulatory powers to prevent serious harm, hinting at possible interim measures if necessary.
Musk, who has increasingly influenced U.S. politics and is criticized for promoting right-wing theories since acquiring X in 2022, is under scrutiny. A Center for Countering Digital Hate report indicated that Musk’s misleading claims regarding US elections reached nearly 1.2 billion views on X.
