The Election of Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has declared as ‘unconstitutional’ Imran Khan’s scathing criticism of the workings of the Commission.
According to an ECP statement, Khan’s criticism is a violation of Article 225 of the Constitution which deals with election disputes.
It said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman “is creating doubts over ECP’s electoral process by not following the legal procedure.”
The ECP said question on the elections could only be raised through a petition, adding that new elections in the country could only be held once assemblies complete their 5-year constitutional term.
Article 225: “Election dispute – No election to a House or a Provincial Assembly shall be called in question except by an election petition presented to such tribunal and in such manner as may be determined by Act of [Majlis-e-Shoora (Parliament)].”
