CHILAS, Gilgit-Baltistan: Deputy Commissioner Diamer Lieutenant (Retd) Muhammad Owais Abbasi issued a Diamer monsoon alert and ordered departments to prepare for possible floods and landslides during Monsoon 2026.
Abbasi, who also chairs the District Disaster Management Authority Diamer, approved the Monsoon Contingency Plan 2026 during a meeting in Chilas, according to the report. He directed the National Highway Authority and the Frontier Works Organisation to keep machinery ready to respond to landslides and flooding on the Karakoram Highway.
Heads of district departments, the Assistant Commissioners of Chilas, Darel, and Tangir, and project managers from the National Highway Authority, Frontier Works Organisation, Aga Khan Rural Support Programme, Power China, Aga Khan Agency for Habitat, Gilgit-Baltistan Rural Support Programme, and other construction companies attended the meeting.
Officials instructed them to remain alert and coordinate preparations for possible flash floods, landslides, and other monsoon-related emergencies across Diamer district. The plan also targets vulnerable locations along the Karakoram Highway, including Thak Nala, where floods and landslides can disrupt travel and supply routes.

The contingency measures include availability of heavy machinery, rescue equipment and essential supplies at critical locations. The report said the meeting aligns with wider pre-monsoon preparedness efforts for Gilgit-Baltistan, where mountainous terrain, glaciers and key road links increase the risk from flash floods and glacial lake outburst floods.
