In his inaugural NBA Finals game, Nikola Jokic led the Denver Nuggets to a comfortable 104-93 victory over the Miami Heat, recording a triple-double performance. Jamal Murray contributed 26 points to the Nuggets’ win.
Jokic ended the game with 27 points, 14 assists, and ten rebounds, playing a key role in the Nuggets’ first finals appearance in 47 years. Aaron Gordon and Michael Porter Jr. added 16 and 14 points, respectively. The Nuggets led the game substantially, trailing for 34 seconds and at one point leading by 24.
With 26 points and 13 rebounds, Bam Adebayo led the Heat, who struggled with their shooting, ending the game with a 41% field goal percentage and 33% from beyond the arc. Gabe Vincent, Haywood Highsmith, and Jimmy Butler contributed 19, 18, and 13 points, respectively, for Miami.
Despite an 11-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter, the Heat couldn’t overcome the substantial deficit they faced. While they managed to reduce the gap to nine points toward the end of the game, they couldn’t overcome the Nuggets’ dominant play.
Nuggets’ coach Michael Malone’s team seemingly aced the game plan, proving their readiness for the crucial game. Despite limited N.B.A. Finals experience, they adapted well to the pressure of the first game, even managing to impress the home crowd.
Jokic became only the second player in the past 25 years, the other being LeBron James in 2017, to record 10 assists by halftime in a finals game. Denver had already established a 59-42 lead by the end of the second quarter, keeping the Heat at bay.
The Heat’s shooting struggles persisted, and they couldn’t find their rhythm until it was too late to catch up with Denver. Max Strus and Caleb Martin notably struggled with their shooting, adding to Miami’s woes.
Historically, Miami has a 1-6 record in Game 1s of the NBN.B.A.inals. The Heat’s only win came in 2011 in a series they eventually lost to Dallas.
On the Nuggets’ side, Jokic joined a select group of players to achieve a triple-double in Game 1 of the finals. He scored more points than any other player in this group. A former Miami college player, Bruce Brown, added 10 points for Denver.
The game drew a sellout crowd, including Grammy-winning artist H.E.R. NFL Legend Peyton Manning, current Denver quarterback Russell Wilson, Broncos coach Sean Payton, and actor-comedian Ken Jeong.
Game 2 is scheduled in Denver on Sunday night.
