On March 7, 2025, President Donald Trump’s administration axed $400 million in federal grants and contracts to Columbia University, accusing the school of “persistent inaction” amid alleged harassment of Jewish students tied to anti-Israel protests.
Four agencies, led by the U.S. General Services Administration, announced the Columbia University Funding Cut, signaling a broader crackdown on campus unrest.

Why the Cuts?
The move follows Trump’s vow to defund schools hosting “illegal protests,” a pledge he doubled down on this week. Columbia faced turmoil last year over Gaza war demonstrations sparked by the October 7, 2023, attacks, drawing anti-Semitism charges.
“Jewish students endured violence and intimidation—ignored by those meant to shield them,” Education Secretary Linda McMahon said. She slammed Columbia for flouting anti-discrimination laws tied to federal cash, vowing, “We won’t tolerate this anymore.”

Friday’s statement marks “round one” of funding slashes, with more expected. The $400 million hit targets grants and contracts, a direct jab at Columbia’s budget. The university stayed silent on the cuts, despite requests for comment. The Columbia University Funding Cut sets a precedent—will other campuses face the axe? Trump’s team says yes.
