Jefferson Lerma’s 39th-minute header propelled Colombia to a victory over Uruguay. Colombia secured its spot in the Copa America final despite playing with ten men following Daniel Munoz’s red card just before halftime.
The triumph in the semi-final marks Colombia’s first appearance in the Copa America final in 23 years, setting up an exciting clash against defending champions Argentina in Miami on Sunday.
Despite facing intense pressure from Uruguay, Colombia maintained their lead, buoyed by a massive turnout of supporters. The atmosphere inside North Carolina’s Bank of America Stadium resembled a home game in Bogota, with the crowd predominantly donning bright yellow Colombian jerseys, overshadowing the few pockets of Uruguayan fans.
The match kicked off with Colombia asserting dominance. The dynamic Liverpool winger Luis Diaz found space on the left to deliver a cross Munoz narrowly missed heading on target. Uruguay countered with threats of their own. Darwin Nunez, another Liverpool standout, missed a couple of key opportunities to equalize, reflecting the game’s open and aggressive play.
The turning point came late in the first half when Munoz, already booked, received his second yellow card for elbowing Manuel Ugarte. This forced Colombia to play the second half with ten men. Colombia’s coach, Nestor Lorenzo, made strategic adjustments, including substituting James Rodriguez to avoid further cards, as Uruguay started to capitalize on their numerical advantage.
Despite being a man down, Colombia’s defence held firm against Uruguay’s increasing attacks. Nicolas de la Cruz and substitute Luis Suarez both came close, with Suarez hitting the post. Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde threatened with a low drive, but Colombia’s luck held.
Uruguay nearly forced a penalty shootout in the final moments, but Giorgian de Arrascaeta sent his shot over the bar. Colombia had chances to secure the win through Mateus Uribe, but he missed a critical shot and hit the bar in the dying seconds. However, his efforts ultimately were forgiven amidst the jubilation of Colombian fans.
