Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Senior Vice President Fawad Chaudhry announced that Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi signed the summary for the dissolution of the provincial assembly, calling for nationwide snap elections.
“Elahi has signed the summary, and the advice has been sent to Punjab Governor [Baligh-Ur-Rehman], and if he does not sign on it in the next 48 hours, then in line with the Constitution, the assembly will stand dissolved,” the PTI leader told journalists in Lahore.
The chief minister and PTI Chairman, Imran Khan, met at Khan’s Zaman Park residence to dissolve the assembly with senior party leaders.
The Lahore High Court (LHC) had barred the assembly’s dissolution, but Elahi won legislative confidence again, and the case was withdrawn.
In keeping with the party’s “promise” to leave the legislative, the PTI leader also dissolved the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
“The KP Assembly will also be dissolved on a similar format a day after tomorrow, and we have fulfilled our promise of going back to the people [for support],” he said.
Fawad said the PTI and its allies had shown they were not “afraid” of returning to the people for votes by resigning from the government in both provinces.
He also announced a letter to Punjab Assembly Leader of the Opposition Hamza Shahbaz for a caretaker government.
The former federal minister said Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will hold elections 90 days after meeting all legal requirements.
“60% of the nation is voting. Thus, the federal government should stop stalling, choose an electoral framework, and hold elections.”
