Suleman Dawood, a 19-year-old passenger aboard the ill-fated Titan submarine that was lost during its expedition to the Titanic shipwreck, had expressed concerns and even a sense of “terror” about the trip, his aunt, Azmeh Dawood, has revealed.
According to Azmeh, Suleman was initially hesitant about the voyage. However, he ultimately decided to accompany his father, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, out of a desire to share in his father’s deep fascination with Titanic’s history and the fact that the journey coincided with Father’s Day weekend.
Emotional Toll of the Tragedy
Learning of the tragic outcome — the presumed death of all five passengers aboard the Titan — has brought immense grief and disbelief to Azmeh. The debris found during the search operation and reported by the US Coast Guard suggested a “catastrophic implosion” of the submarine. Speaking from her home in Amsterdam, Azmeh described the past four days as agonizing.
Azmeh and Shahzada come from one of Pakistan’s prominent corporate families, recognized for their business empire, Dawood Hercules Corp., with significant investments across various industries. Shahzada was vice-chairman of Engro Corporation in Karachi and served as an advisor to Prince’s Trust International, a charitable organization founded by King Charles III.
Despite losing touch with Shahzada in recent years due to disagreements over her use of medicinal cannabis for managing symptoms of primary progressive multiple sclerosis, Azmeh maintained a strong bond with Suleman, who she described as kind-hearted.
Personal Grief Amidst the Larger Tragedy
The loss of her beloved nephew has deeply affected Azmeh, leaving her devastated and mourning. She recalled her nephew’s apprehensions about the trip. She described the emotional toll the incident has taken on her, expressing the overwhelming difficulty of coming to terms with this tragic turn of events.
