Asad Umar, a notable leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), publicly denied any interaction with Jahangir Khan Tareen>
Formerly a trusted confidant of PTI leader Imran Khan, who currently leads a faction of dissidents within the party. Umar made these remarks outside an Islamabad court while attending a case concerning violent protests on May 9.
These comments were made in response to rumors of the Tareen group, a faction of the PTI composed of dissenting party members, intensifying their efforts to win over PTI defectors in preparation for the upcoming general elections.
Several PTI members, including notable figures, have recently left the party following a state crackdown related to allegations of their involvement in vandalism during the May 9 protests that ensued after the arrest of the PTI chief.
Tareen met with former PTI leader Aleem Khan and several other party members on May 29. While there has been no official announcement from the Tareen group regarding their reentry into politics, reports speculate that Tareen, the former PTI leader and financier, plans to reignite his political career with a new party.
The Tareen-led group recently convened in Lahore, where former Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and PTI defector Sardar Tanveer Ilyas announced his decision to align with the group and hinted at the formation of a new party.
Nauman Langrial, another member of the Tareen group, stated that the formation of a new party was under serious consideration. While no final decision has been made, Langrial claimed that several notable ex-PTI leaders would soon join their ranks.
During his court appearance, journalists approached Umar questioning his affiliation with Tareen, to which he refuted any connection. When asked about any pressure he might be under, Umar retorted that the only “pressure” he faced was the frequent court appearances he had to make.
