The Pakistan Meteorological Department has warned that Tropical Cyclone Biparjoy, currently in the Arabian Sea, is expected to evolve into a Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) within 24 hours due to favorable environmental conditions. Despite generating sustained surface winds between 60-70 Km/hour, the cyclone poses no immediate threat to Pakistan’s coastal regions. The Met Department’s cyclone warning centre in Karachi monitors the system’s developments and updates accordingly while urging all relevant authorities to remain alert.
The cyclone, named Biparjoy (meaning “disaster or calamity”) by Bangladesh, is being tracked closely. Sindh’s Chief Meteorological Officer, Sardar Sarfaraz, stated that most Arabian Sea cyclones veer towards Oman or Indian Gujarat due to upper-level divergence, but accurate predictions will be possible once the cyclone moves 20 degrees north. In the meantime, the Indian meteorological department predicts that the cyclonic storm will intensify into an SCS by Thursday and a very severe cyclonic storm by Friday evening.
