The Foreign Office announced Wednesday that Amna Baloch had assumed the country’s 33rd Foreign Secretary role, succeeding Syrus Sajjad Qazi upon retirement.
Baloch was appointed a Grade-22 officer of the Foreign Service of Pakistan last week, becoming the second woman to hold this position after Tehmina Janjua.
Baloch has undertaken key roles in Islamabad and various global missions throughout her diplomatic tenure. She served as Consul General in Chengdu, China, from 2014 to 2017.
Her other assignments include High Commissioner to Malaysia from 2019 to 2023 and Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium, and Luxembourg from 2023 to 2024.
Additionally, Baloch, a mother of two, has worked as a Minister Counsellor in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
She earned a master’s degree in history. She joined the Pakistan Foreign Service in 1991, holding positions such as joint secretary at the Prime Minister’s Office and additional secretary at the Foreign Minister’s Office.
At a recent farewell reception for Syrus Qazi, Baloch acknowledged his 34-year career and commended his leadership, professionalism, and friendship.
Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also spoke highly of Qazi, praising his brilliance, sharp intellect, and dedication to Pakistan’s service. Dar highlighted Qazi’s integrity, transparency, and ethical governance. During high-level meetings, he noted Qazi’s significant contributions and deep insight into Pakistan’s foreign policy and national interests.
