The Arab American Political Action Committee (AAPAC) announced it will not endorse Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris or Republican former president Donald Trump for the upcoming November 5 US elections.
AAPAC criticized both candidates for their “blind support” of Israel amid conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. This marks the first time since its inception in 1998 that AAPAC has declined to endorse a presidential candidate, typically favouring Democrats.
Polls indicate a close race between Harris and Trump. Historically, Arab and Muslim Americans have largely supported Democratic candidates, including President Joe Biden in 2020. However, the continued U.S. support for Israel has diminished their support for the Democratic party. Trump, known for his controversial travel ban affecting Muslim-majority countries and his staunch pro-Israel stance, has also faced significant disapproval from these communities.
Analysts suggest that Harris’ electoral prospects could be adversely affected if Arab and Muslim Americans choose to abstain from voting or opt for a third-party candidate. Many in these communities who have relatives affected by the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon have expressed strong opposition to both Trump and Harris.
While some organizations like Emgage Action support Harris, viewing Trump as a greater threat, AAPAC’s statement on Monday was unequivocal: “We simply cannot give our votes to either Democrat Kamala Harris or Republican Donald Trump, who blindly support the criminal Israeli government.”
