President Mamnoon Hussain has declined to support the continuation of 650MW of power supply to the K-Electric company from the national grid.
During a meeting with a delegation of the K-Electric headed by its chairman and country head of the Abraaj Group Tabish Gauhar with the president yesterday, the company was informed that the government could not continue the facility.
“In the meeting, a representative of Ministry of Water and Power urged K-Electric to reduce its line losses instead of demanding 650MW from the national grid,” the source said.
The K-Electric, which supplies power to Karachi and nearby areas, has demanded of the government to continue its package under which it obtains 650MW from the national grid on a daily basis.
The package was withdrawn by the Pakistan People’s Party government in last days of its term and asked the company to put in place its own generation facility to cater to the requirement of the country’s commercial hub.
However, the K-Electrict had taken the matter to the Sindh High Court (SHC) which granted a stay order which has still been in place for more than three years.
A K-Electric spokesman however, claimed that the president had supported the point of view of the company and had asked the ministry of water and power to continue the supply of 650MW of electricity to the company.
He said the issue of land losses came under discussion, “but we have not been refused the facility of 650MW but have been asked to reduce line losses”.
