WhatsApp’s latest Android beta update, version 2.25.18.18, introduces an AI-powered feature to privately summarise unread messages in chats and groups. Rolled out on June 10, 2025, via the Google Play Store, this Meta AI-driven tool enhances user convenience while prioritising privacy through Private Processing.

The new feature allows beta testers to generate concise summaries of unread messages by enabling Private Processing in the app settings. When a chat accumulates multiple unread messages, a dedicated button appears. Tapping it sends a secure request to the Private Processing system, which returns a summary highlighting key points without storing any data.

This feature is ideal for busy group chats or individual conversations, helping users catch up without scrolling through every message.

Meta AI generates the summaries, but Private Processing ensures robust privacy. Message content remains on the user’s device, with no access granted to WhatsApp, Meta, or external entities. Secure routing and encrypted connections keep requests anonymous and unlinkable to the user’s identity. The feature is disabled in chats with Advanced Chat Privacy enabled, respecting users’ opt-out preferences for AI tools.

The message summary feature is optional. Users can disable Private Processing in settings or avoid tapping the unread messages button. This flexibility ensures users retain control over their experience, aligning with WhatsApp’s commitment to user choice and privacy.

Message summaries mark the first feature powered by Private Processing, with hints of a Writing Help tool in development. This upcoming feature would allow users to refine message tone or phrasing within the same secure environment. The summary feature is available to select beta testers, with a broader rollout planned over the coming weeks.

WhatsApp’s Android beta 2.25.18.18, released on June 10, 2025, introduces AI-powered private message summaries, enhancing user efficiency while safeguarding privacy. With Meta AI and Private Processing, WhatsApp sets a new standard for secure, user-friendly features. As the rollout expands, this tool promises to streamline communication for millions. Stay tuned for more updates on WhatsApp’s AI innovations.
