WhatsApp AI chat summaries are in development as Meta’s messaging platform works on a feature designed to help users catch up on unread messages without scrolling through every conversation. According to recent beta reporting, the tool is being built to generate summaries for multiple unread chats, including busy group conversations and one-on-one threads.
The feature is expected to give users a faster way to review missed messages across multiple chats, without having to open them one by one. That could make it especially useful for people managing high-volume group threads or returning to WhatsApp after long periods away.
According to WABetaInfo, the feature is being tested in WhatsApp beta for Android and is designed to summarise multiple unread chats through artificial intelligence. The reported goal is to help users quickly understand the most relevant missed messages and reduce the friction of manually catching up.
The same report says users may eventually be able to select multiple conversations and receive a concise recap generated by Meta AI, making the feature more useful than a simple per-chat preview.
Privacy Remains Central to the Feature
One of the main selling points behind the new tool is privacy. WABetaInfo says the summaries are expected to rely on Meta’s Private Processing system, which processes requests securely while keeping message content protected.
That matters because WhatsApp users are likely to scrutinise any AI feature that touches personal chats. The reported design aims to reassure users that Meta cannot directly access the messages being summarised during the process.
The feature is still under development and will first be rolled out to selected beta testers once ready. WABetaInfo has reported similar staged testing patterns for earlier WhatsApp AI features, especially those connected to Private Processing and message recaps.
That means the tool is not yet a widely available public release. For now, it remains a feature in testing, with broader rollout likely to depend on performance, privacy feedback and user response.
The reported unread-summary feature reflects a broader effort to bring more AI tools into messaging products. For WhatsApp, the challenge is to add convenience without weakening the platform’s privacy reputation.
If the feature rolls out as described, it could become one of the more practical AI additions to WhatsApp by helping users manage message overload while preserving the app’s emphasis on secure communication.
