On Wednesday, the UK and Egypt instructed their airlines to avoid flying over Iranian and Lebanese airspace due to escalating fears of a broader regional conflict following the killings of senior Hamas and Hezbollah members.
Following Egypt’s directive, the UK advised its airlines to circumvent Iran’s airspace for three hours early Thursday morning.
Airlines worldwide are now altering their flight schedules to avoid Iranian and Lebanese airspace, with some also cancelling flights to and from Israel and Lebanon. This cautious approach stems from heightened concerns about the safety risks of flying through conflict zones, underscored by the downing of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 over Ukraine ten years ago, which resulted in the deaths of all 298 passengers.
United Airlines, based in the US, confirmed the continued suspension of its Tel Aviv flights since July 31 due to security concerns, emphasizing its commitment to passenger and crew safety before resuming services. Similarly, Delta Air Lines has halted its New York to Tel Aviv flights until August 31. According to Flightradar24, British carriers are currently not flying to Lebanon.
Singapore Airlines ceased flying through Iranian airspace last Friday, opting for alternative routes. Likewise, as per a directive affecting all national carriers, Egyptian airlines have been avoiding Iranian airspace, and this new advisory reinforces existing precautions.
Egypt’s civil aviation ministry issued a NOTAM (Notice to Airmen), effective from 0100 to 0400 GMT on Thursday, prohibiting all flights over Tehran’s Flight Information Region during this period. This measure aligns with notifications from Iranian authorities about scheduled military exercises in their airspace on specific dates in August.
The Egyptian ministry underscored this decision was a precaution to mitigate flight safety risks, following information about the military activities. This development in regional aviation safety comes amid a backdrop of heightened military readiness and previous tragic incidents, like the mistaken downing of Ukrainian International Airlines flight PS752 by Iranian air defences in 2020, which killed all 176 people aboard during a tense period with the United States.
