DUBAI: Strait of Hormuz missiles fired by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards damaged commercial ships on Monday night but caused no casualties, Axios reported, citing US officials.
Axios reported that at least two missiles were fired at commercial ships transiting the waterway. Two vessels were damaged, but no casualties were reported, Axios said, citing a US official.
Separately, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said a tanker caught fire early Tuesday after an unidentified projectile struck it east of Limah, Oman.
UKMTO said the vessel was hit on its port side while travelling southbound about 8 nautical miles, or 15 kilometres, east of Limah.
The agency said no casualties or environmental impact had been reported. Reuters said it could not immediately verify the Axios report or determine whether the ships cited by Axios included the tanker in the UKMTO advisory.
Iran has warned ships against transiting the Strait of Hormuz through the southern route in Oman’s waters, insisting that all passage through the strategic waterway must be coordinated with its military.

US Central Command did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Strait of Hormuz lies between Iran and Oman and handles about a fifth of global oil consumption.
The indirect US-Iran talks ended last week without public signs of progress toward a lasting peace deal.
US President Donald Trump said Monday that Washington would either reach a deal with Iran or “finish the job.”
