Médecins Sans Frontières permanently closed its 80-bed hospital in Lankien, Jonglei state, after attackers bombed, looted and burned the facility.
The Guardian reported that MSF said attackers hit the hospital on February 3 after staff evacuated 48 patients, including 26 people with gunshot wounds. The facility had served about 250,000 people.
The aid group said attackers struck the facility’s medical store, burned its cold-chain warehouse, destroyed equipment and stole three vehicles.
The United Nations says fighting between the government’s South Sudan People’s Defence Forces and the opposition SPLM-IO has displaced more than 304,000 people in Jonglei since December.
UN humanitarian officials say attackers have looted or destroyed 33 health facilities in Jonglei, leaving 1.4 million people without healthcare access.
The World Food Programme and other UN agencies warned that 7.8 million South Sudanese could face severe food insecurity between April and July.
