The Sindh government revamped its traffic regulations in 2025, amending the Twelfth Schedule under Section 121-A of the Motor Vehicles Ordinance, 1965. Senior Minister for Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon announced strict penalties for violations, including overspeeding, jumping red lights, and reckless driving. The goal? Enhance road safety across the province.

The updated system introduces hefty fines and demerit points tailored to vehicle types. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Overspeeding: Motorcycles face fines of Rs 5,000, cars Rs 15,000, and heavy transport vehicles Rs 20,000, each with eight demerit points.
  • Driving Without a License: Up to Rs50,000 fine and six points.
  • Reckless Driving: Rs25,000 fine and eight points.
  • Other Violations: Penalties apply for one-wheeling, riding without a helmet, tinted windows, wrong-lane driving, and rooftop passengers.

Memon stressed, “These measures save lives.” Violations such as signal breaking and one-wheeling pose a threat to both drivers and pedestrians. Repeat offenders risk having their license suspended or revoked.

The government plans a digital monitoring system to track violations. Additionally, it aims to boost traffic police capacity. Memon noted that demerit systems succeed in developed nations. For instance, they help identify habitual offenders. Public awareness campaigns will also promote compliance, urging citizens to follow rules for safer roads.
