Sha’Carri Richardson effortlessly advanced through her first-ever Olympic 100-meter race on Friday, clocking 10.94 seconds to secure her spot in the semifinals.
Sporting neon green shoes on the bright purple track of the Stade de France, the American standout won the first eight heats, signalling a strong start to the track events.
The competition remained fierce, with top contenders like Jamaica’s Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, a two-time champion in her fifth and final Olympics, also advancing. Fraser-Pryce finished her heat in 10.92 seconds, just behind Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith, who led the day with 10.87 seconds.
Richardson’s teammates, Melissa Jefferson and Twanisha Terry, also qualified for the next round. Unlike her performance at the Olympic trials earlier in the month, Richardson executed a swift start, transitioning smoothly to a commanding finish and marking her victory with a celebratory chest tap as she crossed the finish line.
She will compete in the semifinals Saturday night, hoping to advance to the final rounds and win the gold medal later that evening.
