NEW DELHI: Rajpal Yadav’s cheque bounce cases led the Delhi High Court to uphold the Bollywood actor’s conviction and sentence him to three months’ simple imprisonment, court reporting said.
The court imposed the sentence in each of seven cheque-bounce cases linked to a long-running loan dispute. The sentences will run concurrently, the Quint reported.
The court also directed Yadav to pay Rs 1.05 crore as compensation to the complainant in each case. PTI, cited by Rediff, reported that the court kept the sentence in abeyance for two months to allow an appeal.
The dispute began after Yadav and his wife, Radha Rajpal Yadav, took a loan to produce his directorial debut film, “Ata Pata Laapata.”

The film failed to recover costs at the box office, and cheques issued to the lender later bounced. The outstanding amount rose to about Rs 9 crore with interest and charges.
The High Court rejected Yadav’s appeal and upheld the earlier order. The Times of India reported that Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma said the law could not be rewritten at the will of an actor.
Yadav remains one of Bollywood’s best-known comic actors. He has appeared in “Hungama,” “Chup Chup Ke,” “Phir Hera Pheri,” “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi,” “Partner”, and the “Bhool Bhulaiyaa” franchise.
