The Punjab government has decided to close all educational institutions in the province until May 11, 2025, due to rising tensions between India and Pakistan, following three explosions that occurred in Lahore.

Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat confirmed the decision, which prioritises safety in light of India’s airstrikes and Pakistan’s retaliation.

On May 8, 2025, Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat announced that all schools, colleges, and universities in Punjab will remain closed until May 11, reopening on May 12, to ensure the safety of students and staff amid rising India-Pakistan hostilities.

The directive comes after three explosions occurred early Thursday on Walton Road in Lahore, near Gulberg, causing panic as residents rushed to flee their homes. The Lahore Police reported that the blasts were heard several kilometres away, prompting a rapid response from Rescue 1122 and bomb disposal teams. Investigations are currently ongoing.

The explosions, which were not linked to specific causes, increased fears following India’s airstrikes on May 6 in Kotli, Muzaffarabad, Ahmedpur Sharqia, Bagh, and Muridke. According to ISPR’s Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, these strikes resulted in the deaths of 31 civilians, as reported by Reuters. In response, Pakistan retaliated by downing five Indian jets (three Rafales, one MiG-29, and one SU-30) and a drone, while also destroying a brigade headquarters.

Punjab’s closure of educational institutions until May 11, 2025, announced by Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat, responds to India-Pakistan tensions and three Lahore explosions. As Pakistan counters India’s airstrikes, the region faces heightened instability. Urgent global diplomacy is needed to restore peace and safety.
