Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has nominated Dr. Yasmin Rashid as its candidate for the Senate seat from Punjab. Elections are scheduled for April 2, following the completion of the six-year term of current senators on March 12.
PTI leader Mian Aslam Iqbal shared this decision on the social media platform X. Iqbal also announced Zulfi Bukhari and Hamid Khan as candidates for general seats and Brigadier (retired) Musadiq for a technocrat seat. Rashid, a senior PTI figure, was nominated after her unsuccessful attempt to win a National Assembly seat against PML-N’s Nawaz Sharif.
Rashid, alongside other PTI leaders, faces legal issues related to the May 9 incidents last year, which involved attacks on military installations following Imran Khan’s arrest. The upcoming Senate elections will fill 48 of the 52 vacated seats, adjusting for the abolished seats for the erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas post the 25th Constitutional Amendment.
The polls will cover seats across various categories in Sindh, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Balochistan, and the federal capital. Returning officers have been appointed in Islamabad and all provinces to oversee these elections, coinciding with by-polls for six Senate seats vacated from Sindh, Balochistan, and Islamabad under the dual membership ban.
