Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Aliya Hamza was released from prison in Gujranwala on Wednesday.
The PTI leader, who had been detained in connection with the May 9 violence, secured bail from a sessions court in Gujranwala on July 31. She gained her freedom after submitting surety bonds valued at Rs 50,000 and receiving a release order from the trial court. Following her release, Hamza left the prison and headed to her residence.
Previously, after receiving bail from an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in a related case, authorities re-arrested her on June 6 for her alleged involvement in additional incidents of violence on May 9. The police indicated that Aliya Hamza was needed by the Gujranwala police for her connections to these events.
On May 9, violent clashes erupted nationwide following the arrest of former Prime Minister and PTI chief Imran Khan at the Islamabad High Court (IHC). PTI supporters held protests in remote and major cities, escalating tensions. The unrest prompted calls for the armed forces in Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad to maintain law and order.
During one such protest, PTI workers attacked army installations and a Corps Commander’s residence in Lahore. It was also reported that Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations Ali Nasir Rizvi sustained severe injuries during the clearance operations.
