NEW YORK, United States: Christopher Jackson returned to Broadway’s “Hamilton” on September 8, nearly 10 years after his last performance as George Washington, beginning a limited engagement at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
The Grammy and Emmy winner originated the role during the musical’s developmental workshops and 2015 Off-Broadway run before moving with the production to Broadway later that year.
Jackson told PEOPLE during rehearsals that returning involved recalling rather than relearning the show. He said memories of the original company resurfaced as he moved through familiar staging and props.
His original George Washington performance earned a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. Jackson remained with “Hamilton” until November 2016 and later reprised the role in the filmed production released on Disney+ in 2020.

Audiences gave Jackson standing ovations during his September 8 return, including during George Washington’s Act 2 farewell number.

Director Thomas Kail and author Ron Chernow joined friends and family onstage after the performance. Jackson said the musical’s 10th anniversary in 2025 helped renew his interest in returning.
Producer Jeffrey Seller said Lin-Manuel Miranda originally conceived the George Washington role with Jackson’s voice in mind. Jackson is scheduled to remain with the Broadway production through January 3, 2027.
