Sergio Rico, the goalkeeper for Paris Saint Germain (PSG), encountered a mishap in El Rocio when a loose horse collided with him, resulting in a fall, local media disclosed on Sunday.
Following the accident, Rico was airlifted to a hospital in Seville and is currently in intensive care, battling a “serious condition,” according to the club. “He is in a critical state,” a representative from PSG affirmed on Sunday. The specifics of his injuries are yet to be disclosed, but he is receiving medical treatment at the hospital.
The Ligue 1 title holders have confirmed that Rico, who serves as PSG’s backup goalkeeper, is in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Virgen del Rocio Hospital in Sevilla.
After being on the reserve as PSG secured their record 11th league title with a 1-1 stalemate at Strasbourg on Saturday, Rico returned to his homeland Spain during a team hiatus.
Rico, a former Seville player, joined the French title holders in 2020 following a 2018-19 season loan to the Premier League team Fulham.
“Sending much strength and wishes for a swift recovery,” tweeted Sevilla, Rico’s previous club. Born in Seville, Rico bagged two Europa Leagues with his local side before being loaned to Premier League team Fulham in 2019.
In January 2022, the French team loaned Rico to Mallorca, following which he returned to PSG for the current season.
With 24 appearances for PSG and a single cap for the Spanish national team, Rico continues to fight his condition.
