The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) won 10 out of 11 seats in the Karachi local government by-elections.
According to unofficial results PPP secured four chairman positions, as many councilor roles, one vice chairman spot, and a seat on the cantonment board.
The PPP candidates were victorious in multiple areas including Liaquatabad, Malir, Clifton, Model Colony Landhi, Baldia Town, Ibrahim Hyderi, Landhi, and Korangi Cantonment Boards.
Conversely, Jamaat-e-Islami won one vice-chairman and one councilor seat. Led by Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, the party captured these positions in Gulberg and Manghopir respectively.
Following the results, Senator Waqar Mehdi, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister, stated, “The PPP has achieved a sweeping victory in Karachi and other parts of Sindh.”
Mehdi also claimed that the voters in Karachi have overwhelmingly rejected Jamaat-e-Islami, attributing their defeat to the public’s disapproval. He noted that the Sindh government is executing projects worth over Rs 200 billion in Karachi, suggesting that the PPP’s electoral success is a direct outcome of their dedication to public service.
In contrast, Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi leader Munam Zafar dismissed the election outcomes, decrying what he described as widespread rigging and ‘electoral terrorism’ by the PPP. He announced plans for significant protests and legal action to contest the election results.
