Pakistani-French fashion designer Mehmood Bhatti was manhandled by a group of lawyers in a civil court under his brother’s direction, who is also a practising advocate.
According to Pakistan’s Dawn News, addressing the media at the Lahore High Court (LHC), Bhatti expressed his concerns, especially for overseas Pakistanis facing legal hurdles. “I have incurred expenses of Rs1.4m to attend this session from Paris,” he disclosed, highlighting the personal cost of seeking justice.
Bhatti is embroiled in a protracted legal battle with his elder brother, Advocate Munir Bhatti, who has lodged 23 lawsuits against him. The fashion designer accuses his brother of using intimidation tactics and boasting untouchable connections within the legal system.
The core of their dispute involves property designated for an orphanage, which Mehmood Bhatti claims he is being prevented from developing. “Despite my frequent trips from Paris over the last four years, there seems to be no resolution in sight,” he lamented.
Further aggravating the situation, Bhatti recounted a prior incident at the civil court where approximately 30 lawyers allegedly assaulted him. He expressed disappointment over the lack of disciplinary actions following the attack.
In a recent legal development, Munir Bhatti escalated the matter to the LHC, challenging the denial of his right to cross-examine a witness related to the property case. However, this appeal, presided over by Justice Ali Baqar Najafi, saw no advancement as the hearing was adjourned.
The LHC has temporarily halted the civil court case pending a resolution. Mehmood Bhatti continues to demand accountability and action against those he claims have wronged him, underscoring the challenges individuals face battling legal and familial disputes across borders.
