AMSTELVEEN, NETHERLANDS: Gareth Furlong’s 53rd-minute penalty stroke completed a Pakistan-Wales 3-3 draw in FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup Pool D, erasing Pakistan’s 3-2 lead on Monday.
Pakistan had trailed 2-1 at half-time before Sufyan Khan converted a penalty corner in the 49th minute. Hannan Shahid scored from open play two minutes later to put the four-time champions ahead.
Furlong then converted the late penalty stroke for his second goal, denying Pakistan all three points. Wales earned another penalty corner with five minutes remaining but failed to convert it.
Abdul Rehman had opened the scoring for Pakistan from open play in the third minute. Furlong levelled through a 25th-minute penalty corner before Rhys Bradshaw gave Wales the lead one minute later.
Pakistan played five minutes with 10 players after Sufyan received a yellow card in the 23rd minute. Wales protected its advantage through a goalless third quarter before Pakistan’s late comeback.
The match began at 12:30 p.m. local time, or 3:30 p.m. Pakistan Standard Time, at Wagener Hockey Stadium. The Pakistan-Wales 3-3 draw left both teams on one point after two Pool D matches.

Pakistan had opened its campaign with a 4-1 defeat by England, while Wales lost 3-1 to India. The two sides remain in contention for the tournament’s second pool phase.
Pakistan will face India at the same venue on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 3 p.m. local time and 6 p.m. PKT. It will be their first Hockey World Cup meeting since 2010.
