Karachi is enduring extreme heat on June 13, 2025, with feels-like temperatures reaching up to 49°C. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the ongoing heatwave, affecting Sindh, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), is worsened by disrupted sea breezes and dry conditions, with relief expected from pre-monsoon rains starting Saturday evening.

The PMD forecasts maximum temperatures in Karachi between 37°C and 39°C, but high humidity pushes the perceived temperature to 43°C–49°C. A disrupted sea breeze, caused by wind circulation over India’s Gujarat region and a western weather system, intensifies the heat. Most of Sindh will remain hot and dry, with no immediate relief until Saturday, when pre-monsoon rains may begin in eastern areas like Tharparkar and Umarkot.

On Sunday, strong winds and thunderstorms are expected in Ghotki, Sukkur, Jacobabad, and nearby regions, potentially easing the heatwave’s grip.

Heatwave Across Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

In Punjab, Lahore recorded 44°C with a feels-like temperature of 47°C on Thursday, driven by a prolonged dry spell. Southern Punjab, particularly the Cholistan Desert, saw temperatures near 48°C, with dried-up water reserves causing livestock deaths and forced migration. The PMD expects intense heat to persist for two more days.

Peshawar hit 40°C in KP, with forecasts predicting a rise to 44°C. Humidity levels reached 52%, with temperatures 6°C–7°C above seasonal averages. Dera Ismail Khan and Bannu recorded 47°C, but light rainfall is expected in Peshawar and other KP districts starting Friday, offering potential relief.

The heatwave has strained resources, particularly in Cholistan, where water scarcity threatens livestock and livelihoods. Local reports highlight severe hardship, with communities migrating to find water. The PMD attributes the extreme weather to climate patterns, including the Gujarat wind circulation, which may also trigger pre-monsoon activity in Sindh over the coming days.
