Islamabad, Pakistan: The federal government will present the Pakistan budget 2026-27 in the National Assembly today. The budget has an estimated outlay of about Rs17.5 trillion.
Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb will present the budget at a session scheduled to begin at 3 pm. Additionally, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has summoned a federal cabinet meeting at the Parliament House at 2:30 pm to approve the proposals.
The government is expected to set a tax revenue target of Rs 15.267 trillion. It has earmarked Rs7.824 trillion for debt servicing and is expected to propose Rs3 trillion for defence.
The budget is also expected to include a plan to collect Rs1.727 trillion through the petroleum levy. Sources said the government is considering increasing the salaries and pensions of federal employees.

For the next fiscal year, the government is likely to set export and import targets of $32.8 billion and $70 billion, respectively. Moreover, sources said no new development schemes are expected. Instead, funds will focus on ongoing projects.
The government may also withdraw the tax exemption granted to the former Federally Administered Tribal Areas, according to the source.
The opposition has decided not to boycott the budget session. Furthermore, a joint parliamentary party meeting resolved to continue protests inside and outside parliament while demanding a meeting with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf founder Imran Khan.
The budget presentation follows the Pakistan Economic Survey 2025-26, which showed 3.7% GDP growth, below the 4.2% target. Nukta reported that Pakistan’s economy reached $452.1 billion and per capita income rose to $1,901 in FY2025-26
