McLaren’s rising star Oscar Piastri claimed a career-defining victory at Sunday’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, overtaking Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to seize the Formula 1 world championship lead for the first time in his young career.
The Jeddah Corniche Circuit’s floodlit night race saw its crucial moment immediately after lights out. Pole-sitter Verstappen received a five-second penalty for gaining an advantage by leaving the track at the first turn – a decision that ultimately shaped the race outcome.
Piastri capitalised masterfully on his rival’s misfortune, building enough gap to neutralise Verstappen’s penalty advantage. The 23-year-old Australian crossed the finish line just 2.843 seconds before the four-time world champion.

“Very happy to have won,” Piastri said post-race. “Made the difference at the start. Great race – though Max was still a bit too close for my liking!”
Historic Championship Position
This victory – Piastri’s third of the 2025 season – propels him to the top of the drivers’ standings. He becomes the first Australian to lead the championship since his manager Mark Webber achieved the feat 15 years ago.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc completed the podium in third, while Piastri’s McLaren teammate Lando Norris finished fourth after entering the weekend as championship leader. Mercedes pairing George Russell and rookie Kimi Antonelli rounded out the top six.

The result continues McLaren’s strong start to the season, with the team holding both the constructors’ championship lead and two drivers in the top four standings. Piastri’s composed performance under pressure at one of F1’s most challenging street circuits signals his arrival as a genuine title contender.
As the Formula 1 circus moves to Melbourne for Piastri’s home grand prix, all eyes will be on whether the young Australian can maintain his championship lead in front of an adoring crowd.
