An Oklahoma principal whom students crowned prom king has become the centre of a powerful story of courage and gratitude. Students honoured Kirk Moore, principal of Pauls Valley High School, at prom just days after he suffered a gunshot wound to the leg while tackling an armed former student in the school lobby.
Students delivered the emotional tribute on prom night, cheering for Moore, high-fiving him, and celebrating as they named him “our king.” The moment quickly drew attention because it came just days after a violent incident that authorities said could have ended in a far greater tragedy.
Students at Pauls Valley High School honoured Moore during prom on Friday night in a scene captured on video. The DJ declared him “our king” while Nickelback’s “Hero” played, and Moore smiled as students surrounded him in celebration. The tribute reflected the community’s gratitude after Moore’s actions helped stop an armed attacker. Students and staff treated the moment as more than a prom tradition. Instead, it became a public thank-you to the principal they believe saved lives.

The incident happened on April 7, 2026, when 20-year-old former student Victor Lee Hawkins entered the school lobby with two loaded semi-automatic pistols. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Hawkins pointing a weapon at a student before Moore rushed toward him.
Hawkins then turned the gun on Moore and shot him in the leg. Despite the injury, Moore charged at the gunman, drove him toward a bench, and pinned him down until another staff member joined him and police arrived. No other students or staff suffered injuries. Authorities said Moore and the school staff prevented a potential mass shooting. Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation official Hunter McKee said their actions saved lives.
Investigators say Hawkins told them he disliked Principal Moore and went to the school intending to kill him. Court documents also reportedly say he wanted to carry out his own school shooting like the Columbine gunmen.
Prosecutors have charged Hawkins with shooting with intent to kill and other firearm-related offences. He is due back in court on May 8, 2026. Moore, who has worked for the district for more than 35 years, is now drawing praise not only for his bravery but also for his decisive response under pressure.
