World number two, Novak Djokovic, has pulled out of next week’s ATP Canadian Open in Montreal.
According to Tennis Canada, the 24-time Grand Slam winner recently advanced to the third round of the Paris Olympics after defeating Spain’s Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic, 37, a veteran of 98 ATP titles, has chosen not to participate in the upcoming hardcourt event, which serves as a precursor to the US Open starting on August 26.
Djokovic’s absence will allow Roman Safiullin, the 26-year-old Russian ranked 66th globally, to compete in the main draw.
The tournament director, Valerie Tetreault, expressed understanding and support for Djokovic’s decision. “While we’re disappointed that Novak will be unable to participate in this year’s tournament, we understand his decision and wish him the best at the Olympics and for the rest of his season,” she stated.
The tournament schedule in Montreal has been adjusted from its usual Monday-Sunday routine to accommodate the Olympics. Main draw action commences on Tuesday, August 6, and concludes on Monday, August 12.
