After Lamar’s performance received a lukewarm reception, the NFL reportedly reconsidered its decision to choose Kendrick Lamar over Lil Wayne for the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show.
In September, the NFL faced criticism for selecting Kendrick Lamar as the 2025 halftime show headliner, particularly from New Orleans fans who hoped to see Lil Wayne perform. The backlash prompted the NFL to formally apologise to Lil Wayne, acknowledging the oversight and regret for not selecting the New Orleans rap icon for the prestigious event.
“Choosing Lil Wayne first would have been the right decision,” an NFL insider disclosed to The U.S. Sun, highlighting Lil Wayne’s deep roots in New Orleans and his enthusiasm for performing in his hometown.
NFL insiders admit that selecting Lil Wayne would have been straightforward and highly welcomed by the local community. “It would have taken just a few minutes to finalize, and Lil Wayne would have been ecstatic to perform in his hometown,” the insider noted, adding that the NFL is now committed to selecting artists who resonate more deeply with the host city.
After it’s been confirmed that Jay-Z selects the Super Bowl Halftime Show entertainment, the NFL has allegedly issued an apology to Lil Wayne and ultimately regrets the decision that was made to move forward with Kendrick Lamar.

“Lil Wayne epitomizes New Orleans. Having him perform there would have been a celebration of his connection to the city,” they added.
Lil Wayne’s Disappointment and Kendrick Lamar’s Controversial Performance
Lil Wayne shared his disappointment over not being chosen, mentioning on Instagram Live that being overlooked “hurt a lot,” especially since he had not prepared himself for such a letdown.
Meanwhile, Kendrick Lamar’s set wasn’t without its controversies. He performed “Not Like Us,” a track seen as a diss toward Drake. The track included provocative lyrics that Lamar chose to moderate during the live performance. Additionally, his choice to wear a necklace worth 1.2 million dollars adorned with 515 diamonds sparked further debate, with some interpreting it as a subtle dig at Drake.

Despite these bold moments, the NFL has taken the feedback seriously, acknowledging the misstep with Lamar and emphasizing the importance of artist-city alignment for future shows. As the NFL plans for upcoming events, it is clear that they aim to make more thoughtful, community-oriented choices for halftime entertainment.
