Russia, Moscow region: A Moscow car bomb killed senior Russian military official Colonel Damir Davydov near his home in Balashikha on Tuesday.
According to Russian media reports, and the independent outlet Astra reported that an explosive device planted under a BMW detonated at about 5:30 a.m. local time on June 9.
Davydov, 57, is the head of the Russian military’s artillery and missile ammunition supply directorate. The role involved oversight of weapons distribution to the armed forces.
Russian-language outlet Mash reported that witnesses tried to pull the driver from the wreckage, but he died at the scene. Meduza also reported that the BMW X3 exploded near Koldunova Street in Balashikha’s Aviatorov neighbourhood.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that President Vladimir Putin of Russia had been informed of the explosion, according to The Guardian. However, Peskov declined to disclose details of the investigation.
No official statement from Russia or Ukraine had identified a suspect or claimed responsibility by early Wednesday. The killing followed a series of attacks on Russian military officials and pro-war figures since the Russia-Ukraine war began.
