RICHLAND PARISH, United States: Meta data centre costs in Louisiana will exceed $50 billion after the company expanded the project to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity.
Meta Platforms said the Northeast Louisiana project, known as Hyperion, would become its largest data centre and one of the world’s largest AI infrastructure investments.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the Richland Parish project had earlier carried a $27 billion estimate. The latest plan more than doubles its original 2-gigawatt capacity.
Meta said private-credit manager Blue Owl Capital owns a major stake in the project. The Wall Street Journal reported that the investor group also includes BlackRock.

The company said it would cover energy, water and related infrastructure costs used by the site. It reached an energy-infrastructure agreement with Entergy Louisiana in March.
Data Centre Dynamics reported that the campus expansion would increase the site’s capacity from a planned 2 gigawatts to 5 gigawatts. It said Meta also planned local infrastructure improvements linked to the buildout.
Business Insider reported that the project has already brought local economic benefits, including contracts for Louisiana businesses and teacher bonuses in Richland Parish. It also noted criticism over energy and water use by large AI data centres.
