Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has advocated releasing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Pakistan (PTI)’s jailed leader, Imran Khan.
During a media briefing, Akhunzada Hussain Yousafzai, Central Deputy Information Secretary of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), declared that Maulana Fazlur Rehman advocated for the release of Imran Khan. Yousafzai also criticized the government’s lack of public support and legitimacy, highlighting Rehman’s call for unified opposition resistance.
JUI-F spokesperson Aslam Ghauri also spoke, noting the government’s failure to honour previous commitments. He mentioned that following Rehman’s overseas trip, further discussions with opposition parties are planned to strategize their next actions.
Ghauri stressed the importance of addressing Imran Khan’s legal situation based on merit, pointing out that his extended detention poses significant legal concerns and underscores the necessity of a fair trial.
This dialogue followed a recent meeting in the capital between PTI leader Asad Qaiser and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazalur Rehman, during which they explored potential collaborative efforts against the government. Although PTI’s initial request for a Monday meeting was postponed, JUI-F confirmed a Tuesday meeting after internal deliberations.
The discussions concluded with an agreement to revitalize existing parliamentary committees and to consider initiating a joint movement. They also agreed to extend outreach to other opposition parties, emphasizing the need for serious collaboration.
Regarding future strategies with JUI-F, PTI intends to consult further with Imran Khan and its senior members. The parties agreed to ramp up their activities following Rehman’s return from his trip abroad.
