Officials in Slovakia orchestrated mass evacuations after schools and banks received over 1,000 bomb threats in a single day.
On May 7, anonymous suspects sent emails claiming explosives were placed in numerous schools across all eight regions of the country.
This prompted immediate countrywide protective measures, deploying local police alongside sniffer dogs and bomb disposal units. The ongoing threat alerts led to widespread evacuations, with officials noting increasing confirmed threats as time progressed.
Many schools and educational institutions halted activities while law enforcement began investigating the alerts. The national police later reported that 110 banks and 40 electrical stores also received bomb threats.
Authorities are treating the situation as a severe terrorist attack due to the significant number of threats. The content of the emails, sent from a Russian email address and written in Slovak, has not been fully disclosed by officials.
The ongoing situation has caused considerable psychological stress nationwide, potentially disrupting educational activities with long-lasting effects. Authorities have warned that suspects if apprehended, could face life imprisonment.
